Shaquille O’Neal
Shaquille O’Neal sounds youthful and ready to go. He had 15 points and 13 boards in the Suns’ win over the Spurs on opening night. Here are the highlights of his interview.
– Shaq had very nice things to say about Kobe Bryant. He said Kobe was the best player in the league. O’Neal admires Bryant’s “ferocity.” Shaq would tell his kids to watch Kobe’s footwork to learn the game.
– Shaq is sticking with his new nickname, ”Shogun,” instead of Dan’s “Big Shaq-tus” — no matter how hard Dan tried to get him to change it.
– Shaq says he’s a lot smarter now. He didn’t start winning championships until he slowed down physically. He was able to sit back a little more.
– Dan asked Shaq if the Suns are too old. O’Neal points out that no youthful teams ever win. Veteran-laden teams seem to have the edge at championship time.
– Shaq says he wants to own a team some day. And when he does, he’ll be a macro-manager — let people do their job.
– Shaq agrees with Charles Barkley that Tim Duncan is the greatest power forward of all time.
– Dan asked Shaq which TV cops he looked up to. Shaq said: “T.J. Hooker and MacGyver.” Neither Dan nor Shaq knew if MacGyver was actually a cop.
